Event Description: The grand opening of the new blockbuster exhibit. Combined with this major opening will be a "Hike for Ike" event featuring a narrated tour of places where Eisenhower spent time as a youth. The exhibit will be in the temporary gallery of the museum. It examines Abilene during the time when a young barefoot boy had simple dreams of the future. His upbringing in a modest Kansas town taught that young boy, Dwight D. Eisenhower, the values of honesty and a hard day's work.

"The most interesting items to work with are the old photographs of Abilene, especially the buildings that no longer exist. The architectural heritage of the community is constantly changing as we become more 'modern.' In some cases, the loss of these architectural jewels is sad." state Dennis Medina, museum curator. About 160 items on display, this exhibit shows people how life must have been in the early 1900s. The objects on loan range from the necessities of everyday, to those of a whimsical nature: Toys, recreational exercise equipment, dental equipment, and advertising memorabilia.

The "Hike for Ike" will start at 9am at the Boyhood Home of the Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum. The narrated trolley tour is free and open to the public. Reservations for the tour are recommended as seating is limited to approximately 30 seats. To RSVP, please call (785) 263-6700 or toll-free 877-RING-IKE.
