It may seem a stretch to suggest that a biopic of George Hamilton--in his teenage years, before he arrived in Hollywood--would have much appeal. Yet, despite the odd subject matter, "My One and Only" has undeniable charm and interest. Renee Zellweger plays young George's life-loving mom who takes her two sons on the road after catching her bandleader husband in bed with another woman. Together they travel the country, hopping from Boston to Pittsburgh to St. Louis so that she can try to snag a new beau. None of her boyfriends are particularly suitable. She's not the greatest mom, but her sons are patient with her, and with Zellweger in the role it's easy to see why: Here she creates another wonderful character, a flawed, outgoing, sympathetic woman who won't be beaten down by life. Her cock-eyed optimism, her rather touching inability to see reality, and the family's life-on-the-road existence all tell us a great deal about the formation of George Hamilton, the debonair playboy who showed more commitment to having fun (and a great tan) than to acting. From the physical details of costuming, hair styles, automobiles, architecture, music, and cultural references, the movis is note-perfect in creating an idealized portrait of the 50s and 60s. "My One and Only" is a delightful tribute to everyone who marches to a different drummer.

Performance: KWU Jazz Band 11/23/2009 7:30 PM - 11/23/2009

Kansas Wesleyan University's Jazz Band Concert.

Thanksgiving Buffet & Thanksgiving Package - Ramada Hotel 11/26/2009 11:00 AM - 11/26/2009 1:00 PM

The Thanksgiving Buffet is from 11am-1pm and reservations are required. The Romantic poets included William Blake, Lord Byron, and Percy Bysshe Shelley: impossibly handsome, youthful, self-destructive, hedonistic pleasure-seekers; it was the brevity of their lives, a sense of inevitable tragedy destined to extinguish their creative flames too early, which made their myth immortality. No poet better embodied that feeling of other-worldy talent tragically cut short like John Keats, who died of tuberculosis at the age of 25. And no love affair better embodied the idea that the purest love was the communion of two souls, not bodies, than the romance between Keats and his young neighbor, Fanny Brawne. Director Jane Campion creates a truly romantic, dreamlike atmosphere that infuses the film. "Bright Star" is also remarkable in its depiction of how a creative genius creates. Campion employs beautiful images, gloriously photographed by cinematographer Greig Fraser. The male and female characters are both complex, interesting, three-dimensional figures, superlatively acted. Because of their moral and social codes, Keats and Fanny never consummated their love, but the actors convey the idea that this was not just a capitulation to Victorian society or convention. The physical separation actually evoked an "ideal" which makes their love burn brighter. The film soars because of the chemistry between the main actors, who make the unfulfilled lovers ache with longing that's palpable to the audience--and far more erotic than most of today's more graphic couplings.<br><br>Take a writerly look at the poetry of John Keats in a post-Thanksgiving talk at the Salina Art Center, 242 S. Santa Fe, with Patricia Traxler and Lori Brack. We promise no turkey, just good food for the spirit. This program is held in conjunction with the screening of the film "Bright Star" at the Art Center Cinema November 27-December 3. Traxler and Brack will provide copies and discussion of a few Keats poems, explore what in today's world might have energized a renewed interest in Romanticism (which was itself a reaction to the Industrial Revolution), present a brief overview of the Romantic poets, and consider the poetry in the film. The discussion is FREE and open to all.<br><br>"New York Times" reviewer A.O.
